Colorado Ag Day is March 16, 2011
LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Governor John Hickenlooper has proclaimed March 16, 2011, as “Colorado Ag Day.” The day coincides with National Ag Week, March 13-19, and is designed to celebrate the abundance provided by America’s agricultural producers.
“Colorado's farmers and ranchers contribute greatly to our way of life. Besides providing food and fiber, agriculture also protects our natural resources,” said Commissioner of Agriculture John Salazar. “Colorado's diverse agriculture and food industry is a large part of our great state's economy, generating approximately $20 billion annually and supporting more than 108,000 jobs.”
Colorado Ag Day and National Ag Week recognize American agriculture and the contributions of the farmers and ranchers. The events focus on educating consumers about how agriculture provides almost everything we eat, use and wear.
A number of events are scheduled in Colorado to honor those involved in American agriculture:
Feeding those in Need
Colorado agricultural producers provide safe, abundant, and affordable food for their neighbors and families around the globe. Members of the Colorado Agriculture Council will share their bounty with those in need.
Food will be provided to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Denver. Colorado’s agricultural community considers it important to help seriously ill children and their families.
The Council and other friends of agriculture will also provide food made with local, farm fresh ingredients and a donation of approximately $55,000 worth of food and cash to Food Bank of the Rockies. The donation includes 130,000 eggs from the Colorado Egg Producers Association, a pallet of sugar from the Colorado Sugarbeet Growers, and 48,000 pounds of flour from the Colorado Association of Wheat Growers. This donation will provide over 100,000 meals to hungry Coloradans struggling everyday to put food on their plates.
