The wholesomeness and affordability of eggs has remained constant since the dawn of modern egg farming in the early to mid-20th century. But the way farmers have produced, inspected and delivered eggs to consumers has changed significantly. Today’s egg producers are constantly innovating and improving the egg’s journey from farm to table. Members of the Colorado Egg Producers (CEP) Association take pride in utilizing cutting-edge technology, and implementing evolving labeling policies to produce the best possible eggs for Colorado consumers.
“Our members are committed to advancing egg production and supporting the next generation of agriculture,” said Jerry Wilkins, president of CEP. “We strive to innovate on all levels, from the egg production process and environmental and animal care best practices to educating future generations of Coloradans about food and agriculture. Together, CEP’s six egg farms produce more than one billion eggs every year and provide employment for more than 230 farm families, many of whom are second or third generation farmers.”
Today’s egg production is almost 100 percent automated to efficiently provide consumers with fresh, safe and affordable eggs. Automatic egg grading machines can process 10,000 to 18,000 eggs per hour while inspecting each egg for imperfections. Eggs are automatically weighed and packed into cartons by multi-caser machines. Robotic palletizing systems configure pallets with various sized containers as needed in a particular shipment.
Innovation in egg production does not just benefit consumers; it benefits hens as well. Automatic sensor devices are used to control the temperature and lighting in barns as well as monitor food and water consumption. This allows egg farmers to create comfortable living conditions for their hens. By providing hens with fresh air and clean food and water, egg farmers ensure that their hens are more productive while receiving the best care possible. As an association, CEP was the first state to develop and implement an Animal Care Doctrine. Each of our producers and members have signed this Doctrine and are committed to the best possible care of chickens based on scientific principles and animal husbandry standards.
Current and future egg producers have more to navigate than just new technology. As the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) deliberates on new labeling requirements for genetically engineered products, CEP members continue to provide detailed label information so consumers can feel confident about the eggs they buy. CEP is proud to offer consumers the choice between cage, cage-free, free-range, organic, nutrient enhanced, brown and white eggs. Each package of fresh, locally produced CEP eggs has a detailed food label with comprehensive ingredient and nutrition information.
